E3 2017 Press Conferences, Part 3

Well, I'm a day late, so sue me. Nah, just kidding. Please don't sue me. I watched the Ubisoft press conference yesterday, but then I took a break from all these announcements and watched Sony and Nintendo only today. Here is the finish!

A big WTF ran across my face at the very beginning of the Ubisoft presentation and I'm sure I wasn't the only one feeling like that. The announcement of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle took me completely by surprise. Eh, what the hell. I'm gonna skip it just like I skipped almost every Mario game. Next!

The Crew 2 looked pretty nifty, adding water and air vehicles to the mix, but since it's basically multiplayer-only I'm gonna skip this one too. Now there was something I definitely will be checking out: Transference. A VR thriller. The cinematic trailer looked promising, hopefully the game will deliver!

Far Cry 5 wasn't really a surprise, since there was already a trailer out, but the gameplay demo was certainly good. Of course there were a lot more games in the Ubisoft press conference (like another Just Dance...), but with the exception Transference none of them got me really hot. Until the last game!

A pig. Eating. Disgusting. A monkey. Talking UK slang. A golden statue. A disc. Swiss chocolate. And an insane police chase in a city which looked like some sort of "Neo Tokyo" (or basically any sci-fi which has flying cars and high building). Honestly: I had no idea what was going on until the very last moment. After 15 years the wait is finally (well, almost) over. Beyond Good and Evil 2. Thank you and good night!

Just kidding, I'm going straight to Sony. My beloved PlayStation. The press conference was good. Not great, just good. Almost everything they showed was already known, so no big surprises. Let's take a quick look at the games I'm interested in.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Great intro with the live music. And I absolutely love Claudia Black. Even if it's only her voice in the game. Then a DLC for Horizon Zero Dawn called "The Frozen Wilds". Another must have. Days Gone. Check. Finally with some real gameplay! Shadow of The Colossus remake. Well, maybe... I have the HD version on my PS3, I'm fine with that for now.

Now there was an announcement which came completely unexpected and I'm really surprised that it was announced by Sony and not by Bethesda: Skyrim VR. Like I already wrote in part 1, I never played TES and was never interested in the series (or fantasy/magic/dragons in general), but I'll probably check this one out. By the looks of it, it'll be Move compatible (2 moving hands in the trailer), so there are quite a few interesting options possible.

I was also surprised how many VR games Sony announced. There were like 6 or 7 trailers. Finally they are taking VR seriously and we - the early adopters - are getting some good content! The game I'm most looking forward is made by none other than Supermassive Games (thanks for Until Dawn and Rush of Blood, guys!). It's called The Inpatient and is looking gorgeous, just like their other games. I'm already getting impatient!

Maybe the 3 biggest games on PlayStation followed next: God of War (4), Detroit: Become Human and Destiny 2. Each one with fresh, new content and some sweet gameplay. Except for Destiny which got only a pretty short trailer. At least now we know what the main villain looks like. Hello Gary! ;)

(I'm not gonna talk about the Spider-Man game, because I don't care about Spider-Man. But the gameplay looked good, I'm sure fans will love it.)

Last but not least: Nintendo. I'm not a fan of Nintendo. Never was. Never could understand the "fanboyism" which surrounds each and every fucking rehash of Mario and Pokemon. Game after game, it's the same. And they still haven't learned to produce enough hardware for a release paving the way for scalpers every time. They have some great IPs, gathering dust, completely ignored. So for me, the whole press conference boiled down to 1 frame. 1 freakin' picture: Metroid Prime 4. There wasn't anything else. No trailer, no gameplay, just a logo. But that was enough. It's good to know that the franchise isn't completely dead and I hope that they'll redeem themselves after that disgrace called Federation Force. And why wasn't Metroid: Samus Returns show in the conference?

Now, Nintendo, please listen to me: bringing back Metroid is good. It's more than good. It's great! But you still have an IP which desperately needs to be de-dusted: F-Zero. WE NEED ANOTHER F-ZERO GAME! How come there are only 3 F-Zero games, but a kajillion Pokemons and a bazillion Marios? What has F-Zero done to you that it's been completely ignored since GX?!?!?

Well, there you have it folks. My journey through the press conferences of E3, 2017.

Making a game for the PlayStation 2

Actually, not really for the PS2 - not natively at least. Rather making a game for YaBasic which can be played on the PS2. I started my geek life when I was 11 years old and got my first computer (486). A few years later I found some games written in QBasic on a gaming magazine's CD. That was the first time I came in contact with programming. I didn't understand much back then, because I wasn't taught before and I didn't speak any English (it's my 3rd language...) so I was just trying to figure out how the games worked by modifying stuff. These games were simple text adventures, where you had to make choices and the game would progress that way. There were no commands like "go left" or "pick up". The game presented you all the options and you had to input the number of the option you chose. And instead of "if-else" there were GOTOs everywhere. This was how I made my first game, a multiple-choice quiz with 10 questions. Since I didn

Building my own arcade cabinet - a photo diary

This has been in the making for 1.5 years and I'm thrilled to share it with you. But instead of writing a long post with boring details, I'll just add short comments to the pictures. Enjoy! The beginning: RasPi3 and RetroPie started for the first time. Buttons & joystick from AliExpress for $20. Neat! Testing the buttons. The first box. Version 2 of the box, much cleaner. Should be something like this, when it's finished Temporary solution: ATX power supply from an old PC. The amplifier arrived, too! Learning to solder: if your tip looks like this, you're doing something wrong. Visual concept number two: controller and speaker box. The messy insides of the controller box. A friend helped me out cutting the wood for the final controller box. That's not the final box, just another test run. This is more like it. Made from an old office desk. Button layout on paper...

RE: "Hacking" the PS2 - Game development

Happy 2019 everbody! This is a follow-up to my previous post:  "Hacking" the PS2 This whole thing started basically when I discovered that there is a possibility to write your own programs for the PS2. I didn't have a PS2 back in the day (I started collecting consoles around 2011) so I just found out recently. Finding out how YaBasic worked and "reverse engineering" the checksum in the source code proved to be so entertaining that I basically lost interest in making a game after that. During the holidays I had a lot of time and to make something productive I decided to take it up again and this time actually make a game. I also wanted to "streamline" the development process by not having to use 3 different programs and 2 OS's to test every change in the code I make. My old process was: write the code in Vim run the Bash script (from the previous post) to add the checksum use PS2 Save Builder to make a save file use mymc to a
